Or perhaps you ARE Malaysian, and can’t get enough of food. If you are anything like me and get irreversible food cravings at all times of day (especially late at night!) you’re going to want to read this article. Malaysia is a food haven, and the best and yummiest food can be found right here in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Whenever street food of Kuala Lumpur is mentioned, tourist guide books will be quick to direct you to famous food street Jalan Alor. However, any local will know that this smoky street filled with hawker stalls is largely a big tourist trap with hawkers ready to charge you that extra ringgit.

Whenever street food of Kuala Lumpur is mentioned, tourist guide books will be quick to direct you to infamous food street Jalan Alor. However, any local will know that this smoky street filled with hawker stalls is largely a big tourist trap with hawkers ready to charge you that extra ringgit. Instead, head to the some of the top food streets around Kuala Lumpur and you will be thanking us!

1. Jalan Petaling, or Chinatown

[caption id="attachment_435" align="aligncenter" width="566"] Source : hungrygowhere.my[/caption]

You may know Jalan Petaling as the place to head to for knock-off designer shoes, bags, perfumes and souvenirs of every size and shape imaginable. However, there is also a great variety of Chinese food to satisfy your hunger after the long hours of browsing this street. To name a few; roast duck at Sze Ngan Chye (which means 4-eyed boy in Cantonese) to wanton noodles at Koon Kee and Hainanese chicken rice at Kam Kee and Nam Heong, Jalan Petaling won’t disappoint. It is one of the best food streets in town, for its location alone.

[caption id="attachment_436" align="aligncenter" width="900"] Sze Ngan Chye Roast Duck (source : campusplus.com.my)[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_441" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Kim Lian Kee Restaurant (Source : kualalumpur.ws)[/caption]

2. Madras Lane

[caption id="attachment_439" align="aligncenter" width="604"] Madras Lane (Source : chopinandmysaucepan.com)[/caption]

Literally next to Chinatown, within the Chinatown wet market, is a small alley famed for its flavourful bowls of assam laksa, curry laksa, yong tau foo, chee cheong fun and cendol. This is a personal favourite food haunt of mine although prices have been steadily increasing over the years – why I still come here is a testament to the delicious, mouth-watering food one can find here – it never disappoints! Traders can be pretty territorial though, so where you sit determines what you can order and from who! (which sounds a little ridiculous, but with such stiff competition, it’s not hard to see why they do what they do).

3. Jalan Sayur (Pudu Wai Sek Kai)

[caption id="attachment_440" align="aligncenter" width="1024"] Jalan Sayur aka Pudu Wai Sek Kai (Source : kl.coconut.co)[/caption]

Wai Sek Kai is translated into Glutton Street, and it’s easy to see why. The Pudu Wai Sek Kai is one of the oldest and best food streets in KL with a history to it spanning over 60 years. Many traditional hawker food stalls will guarantee you a full stomach at prices that won’t break the bank. From stalls selling crispy fried chicken, to steamed egg custard and charcoal barbecued squid, this sounds amazing already. If you are planning to make a stop here, come after 6pm, as most stalls only open then.

4. Jalan Peel

[caption id="attachment_442" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Peel Road (Source : thestar.com.my)[/caption]

Nearby the Pudu area in neighbouring Cheras, you will find another famed food street, Jalan Peel. While here, do not miss one of the most famous stalls here - the Nasi Lemak Peel Road, with add-on options such as wild boar meat curry, luncheon meat, fried chicken and squid. It’s been here for over 40 years, so they must be doing something right.

[caption id="attachment_443" align="aligncenter" width="1142"] Peel Road Nasi Lemak (Source : mforum.cari.com.my)[/caption]

Apart from nasi lemak, one other stall to check out is Yang Kee Beef Noodles for springy handmade noodles with minced beef. If that is not enough, satay and chicken wings can also be found here – great as appetisers!

5. Kepong Wai Sek Kai - Jalan Antoi Kiri

[caption id="attachment_444" align="aligncenter" width="520"] Kepong Wai Sek Kai's Gei Dak Sik (Source : chowhound.com)[/caption]

Another day, another Wai Sek Kai. Kepong’s is different from the rest as it is concentrated in a makeshift food court, its appearance complete with zinc roofing rather than hawker stalls along the street. However, this doesn’t detract from the food which makes this place stand out. You’ll be spoilt for choice with offerings such as its famous grilled chicken wings, ice kacang and grilled seafood.

6. Jalan Klang Lama

Next, be introduced to Jalan Klang Lama, also known as Old Klang Road. This area is surrounded by residential dwellings with a big Chinese population, naturally making a lot of Chinese food available in this area. A notable mention along this road is Lian Kee Pan Mee, which serves up hearty bowls of pan mee in thick, flavourful broth. You can also find many restaurants proper along Jalan Klang Lama, if you prefer to move away from the smokey hawker-lined street, serving everything from Thai to Japanese cuisine, steamboats, bak kut teh (or pork rib soup served with white rice) to even dim sum at night!

[caption id="attachment_445" align="aligncenter" width="1000"] Some of the food at Jalan Klang Lama (Source : ilovemsiafood)[/caption]

7. Jalan Bangkung (Bangkung Row)

If you are taking a special someone out on a date, you may want to skip the hawker stalls and head here instead! Nestled amongst the upscale neighbourhood of Bangsar, the row of restaurants here on Jalan Bangkung presents everything for the discerning diner from Spanish food at La Cava to local food and fare at Lucky Bo’s. Known for its stretch of long-standing restaurants and the occasional fine dining establishment, Jalan Bangkung has been home to it all. After dinner, you can extend your night and enjoy a drink or two at Jarrod & Rawlins. After that, why not top it off with some live music at Bobo’s?
